The “Black Gate” was added to Newcastle Castle between 1247 and 1250, forming an additional barbican in front of the earlier north gate of the castle. It consisted of two towers with a passage running between them. On either side of the passage was a vaulted guardroom. There was a drawbridge at the front (facing west) and another at the rearcourtier. Alexander Stephenson substantially altered the gatehouse, rebuilding the upper floors. Stephenson then let the Black Gate out to various tenants, one of whom was a merchant, named Patrick Black. It was he who gave his name to the Black Gate.
Keep in mind the castle visit is split in 2 discontinuous buildings and remember to buy your ticket at the Black Gate first to avoid having to double back.
A brilliant bit of history. If you get a chance to have a guide take you around go for it. Parking is a no go so best use public transport.

Benwell Roman Temple - Hadrian's Wall

50 Broomridge Ave, Newcastle upon Tyne NE15 6QP, United Kingdom
What We Offer:

The remains of Benwell Roman Temple can be found in a residential area a few miles from the centre of Newcastle. It was a small temple to the native god Antenociticus, in the civilian settlement which stood outside Benwell fort. Almost 17 miles west of Benwell is the beautiful village of Corbridge. Here you will find Corbridge Roman Fort, where you can marvel at a remarkable hoard of objects found during excavations, including Roman armour and trinkets. You can also walk down a Roman high street and imagine soldiers stopping here to stock up on supplies before reaching the most northerly outpost on the Roman Empire.

It’s in a neighborhood. It’s fenced in and groomed. Unless you love history and walking on the same land where the Romans had walked, I would skip this and go to where more of Hadrian’s Wall is visible.
Only saw it from the car but spoke to gentleman who lives near and he gave some interesting info. Will go and look properly at some point.
Benwell Roman Temple is small but impressive. Nestled amid a housing estate it’s a great example of the Roman history along Hadrian’s Wall. The original items excavated from the site of the temple are displayed in central Newcastle, at the Great North Museum: Hancock.
