Newcastle Castle

The Black Gate, Castle Garth, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1RQ, United Kingdom
What We Offer:

Steeped in history, this imposing Norman fortress is a rugged reminder of northern England’s turbulent past Newcastle Castle is where the story of Newcastle began and the reason it got its name. This was no baron’s stately home. The Castle was a grim symbol of royal authority, where armies gathered and criminals were imprisoned and executed. The most commanding views across the city and the River Tyne. The quitessential view of Newcastle and Gateshead. Enjoy exploring the ancient passageways and chambers; discovering the hidden stories of the Castle’s inhabitants over the centuries and take a journey through The Gateway to Old Newcastle.

The black gate has an elevator. The castle keep itself does not, and mainly exists out of lots and lots of stairs and hallways to wander. Loved it! What i liked about this castle in comparison to other castles, is that Newcastle Castle has no obvious modern features for hosting events dominating the scene, so you can stay in that medieval mood throughout your visit. Interesting information and local tales are presented everywhere.
A wonderful visit to the Castle and the Black Gate next door. Lots of history to read about, nice little gift shop – with toilets. Be warned though, there are lots and lots of steps to go up and down in both buildings, although the Black Gate has a lift for those who need it. The Castle though is not suitable for wheelchair access or people not steady on the stairs. Lots to see and take photos of and wonderful views of the city from the rooftop if you make it that far.

Newcastle castle is situated right in the middle of the city. It is comparatively smaller than the other castles I’ve visited, but very well preserved and maintained. You can buy the tickets from the reception area and it was not that busy. There was no waiting time nor a queue. Location was a 15 minute walk from the city centre. Easily accessible.

Blandford House became a museum in 1978 and was re-launched as Discovery Museum in 1993. Great museum with lots to see. Entry is free, but a suggested donation is there which I believe is not too bad. Museum has a good collection of historic items from Newcastle during different eras and it was quite interesting to learn the history of the city and see how things looked back in the days. There’s a lot of activities for kids. Great day out activity to do if you are in the city with family.

For us was more than simply museum. For Free entrance/ or a donation, we enjoy it. Are amazing for kids that can not just wolk and have a look, but here they can interact a lot, even 2 years one, 10 years or 35+ husbands. Was perfect for walk inside with pram, so wheelchairs can as well. Be patient to go till end / 3’rd floor – and enjoy the Science Maze. + A local Cafe Shop.

We’ve visited a few times in past and it’s always been enjoyable. Unfortunately during this last week of the school hols the equipment had obviously taken too much of a hammering from the kids so a lot of interactive displays were out of order. The Red Arrows motion experience was great (£3.50 per person charge) and we love the Tyneside through the ages exhibition. Cafe adequate but not a huge amount of choice. Overall a great, free (though donation made), museum for kids and adults alike.

The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas

What We Offer:

Newcastle Cathedral holds the city’s story in its stones and monuments. This is the only cathedral in the UK dedicated to St Nicholas and represents over 900 years of Newcastle’s development: its iconic Lantern Tower having originally been a guiding light for ships sailing up the River Tyne. We are a welcoming, diverse and inclusive congregation, with an excellent choir, and a beautiful historic building, which visitors are very welcome to explore. You are warmly invited to Newcastle Cathedral – whether you join us for worship, are seeking some space for peace and quiet, or are interested in exploring the Cathedral’s treasures.

After over thirty years it was great to visit this wonderful building again and see so much activity within it. The interior is filled with fascinating memorials and the trip up the tower was superb. A reasonable level of agility is required to climb the narrow spiral steps and then to move around beneath the various beams and braces on the roof. Our guides were very knowledgeable and informative. The cafe was top-notch too with some fabulous cakes on offer. Thanks for a memorable morning.
Lovely to walk around. Steeped in history that us well documented and explained, with interactive guide screens. There’s a superb display of wedding gowns on at the moment, which was delightful. Well worth allowing time for a visit.
Nice looking Cathedral. Went in there by chance and walked into a orchestra practice for an upcoming concert. Very nice acoustics. There was also a wedding dress exposition there at the time which was interesting though not my cup of tea.
